The sun shines for Anneke Residence’s 5th Anniversary
LAST FRIDAY 8th June 2012 marked five years since De Thuiszorg Costa Blanca/Cruz Costa Blanca acquired Marina Senior nursing home. Much has happened in these last five years, and a sun drenched celebration took place at the care home to mark the occasion.
As regular RTN readers will know, soon after the acquisition the name of the care and nursing home was changed to ‘Anneke Residence’, this name originating from the absolute belief that its owner, Lisette de Leeuw-Kessels, had then and continues to have today that a care home should be an environment that provides the same protection, security and ‘homeliness’ that she has always been fortunate to have experienced all her life; a ‘homeliness’ such as her mother, Anneke Kessels-Derks, had always provided for her and her brothers. Hence the name: ‘Anneke’.
And shortly afterwards the home care side of the business also changed its name, to ‘Anneke Integral Care Services’ to emphasise the conjoined nature of the home care service: the day care service and the nursing home care.
In 2009 the highly sought after ISO 9001:2008 quality certificate was obtained, establishing Anneke Integral Care Services as one of the very few certified care organisations on the Costa Blanca.
One of the underlying realisations of Anneke Residence is that residents in a nursing home are often not very mobile anymore and thus rely on what the direct surroundings have to offer. Their age or the fact that their families do not live locally may also mean that not all residents receive many visitors. So it is vital that the environment is made as pleasant and lively as possible, and so at Anneke there is abundant freedom of movement and space for everyone, inside and outside, with plentiful seating areas, with everywhere being beautifully decorated using warm colours.
All in all, much work has been done the last five years, making Anneke Integral Care Services into a renowned institution within the Dutch, English and Norwegian communities on the Costa Blanca – and increasingly within the Spanish community.
This then leads to another objective for the next few years: to become an organisation that is clearly a part of Spanish society while also being aimed at the specific (cultural) backgrounds, wishes and needs of a very varied group of clients.
To mark the anniversary local dignitaries such as Mrs Pilar Collado Capilla (director-general of the ministry of Justice for Valencia), Mr Eric Durieux (Dutch consul) and Mr Vicente Arquez, Mayor of Alfaz del Pi attended and were able to congratulate Lisette and all the Anneke staff who have contributed to everything that has been achieved in these five years.
The day was full of entertainment for the residents, including a performance of ‘Cirque au soleil’, a special celebratory lunch with music, a champagne reception with speeches, more music, and closed off with a celebratory drink in a nearby hotel for the Anneke workers who make Anneke the special care home that it is.
If Carlsberg chose to run a care home for the elderly, it would probably be like Anneke! Congratulations to Lisette and all concerned from all at RTN; you provide a vital service and we look forward to covering further events as they happen at Anneke.

A change for the much, much better!
LUC VAN der Heyden, who is 82, lives in Calpe. Previously one of the most active people you could hope to meet in life, he was formerly a painter, then an architect, then a technical draftsman involved with ship propeller design before becoming involved in the wine industry in California. He has lived all over the world but finally settled in Spain with his wife because of the warm climate.
Sadly Luc’s wife passed away two years ago and he turned to a home care agency for support. But evidently not all home care agencies are the same.
The relationship with the home care company started well, and on a professional footing, and Luc was quickly introduced to and cared for by Rita Bratuszewski who was new with that agency. Sadly the two of them meeting was virtually the only good thing to come out of that agency.
Very quickly both Rita and Luc discovered that the backup provided was completely inadequate. Rita was pretty much left on her own, and when she had any doubts about the care for Luc there seemed to be no-one for her to turn to. Neither Rita nor Luc considered that he was getting value or a proper service for what he was paying.
“Proper support was seriously lacking” says Rita. “It was worrying me where care for Luc was concerned. Every nurse and carer has to be confident that in an emergency or case of need, proper and rapid assistance will come from their organisation. But it got to such a point where Luc and I were feeling that there had to be something better than that agency for both him as the patient and me as the carer. Then by pure good fortune we read about Anneke Integral Care Services and we visited the company in Anneke Residence, Alfaz del Pi.
“We were warmly greeted and shown around the Residence by Lisette de Leeuw, the General Manager, and we were immediately impressed.” Rita continues: “There is something very welcoming about the home, it has a lovely atmosphere, and everyone working there seems pleasant. Even better, apart from the Nursing Home Anneke has a full Home Care team, professionally run, trained, overseen and with full back up from the nurses, doctors and experts at the Residence if ever help is needed.”
“This was everything that Rita and I needed to know,” explains Luc. “What Lisette showed us at Anneke Integral Care Services was totally reassuring. Right from the start we were affectionately welcomed and able to appreciate the professional atmosphere. And the fact that there is a full homecare team was absolute music to my ears.”
The result of the meeting was that both Rita and Luc rapidly jumped ship! Rita left her previous firm, and has not for a second looked back. “Now I have companionship, access to expertise, to colleagues and to the best equipment. How much better equipped I feel!”
Luc is now so much more reassured and comforted. Rita has remained his main carer, but with Anneke there is always someone on hand 24/7 should she have a query, or Luc have an emergency of any sort. And there is full professional cover available whenever Rita takes a holiday. “I am absolutely delighted with the care I receive from Anneke: they are the best” he says. “I feel settled, they are all nice colleagues for Rita and I am in good hands.”
If at any time either Rita or Luc have any problem they can call Paula Reed, Anneke Nurse Co-ordinator. The Anneke Integral Care Services is made up of a team of qualified carers who all speak English, all have full in-service training at Anneke and indeed Anneke has its own fleet of specially equipped vehicles designed for wheelchairs etc., to access patients whenever needed.
If you or one of your loved ones needs assistance, or would benefit from homecare, then Luc and Rita’s experience is important to bear in mind. The Anneke Home Care team are well trained, meet regularly to discuss patients’ progress and care plans, are properly supported and supervised, and really care about their patients.
For more information or to make an appointment to view the Nursing Home or discuss Home Care requirements please call Anneke Integral Care Services on 96 681 4034 or contact Paula Reed, nurse coordinator, for the Home Care service on 626 960 773.

Art in Alfas del Pi
The latest art collection at The Anneke Residence in Alfas del Pi was unveiled on Wednesday afternoon. Changing the art that hangs on the walls throughout the Residence is now becoming a regular thing, because changing the pieces on show helps to stimulate and brighten the surroundings for the 50 or so residents.
