Life Electrics with Sparks

SPARKS WELCOMES you to a new RTN column about living with electrics on the Costa Blanca. Here you will find helpful tips on safety and technical matters, and useful cost saving ideas.

Electricity is probably the most taken for granted thing we have in everyday life. It’s the heart of the home but it can be a death trap as well as a life saver, and you might even say that it’s electricity, not money that makes the world go round. We all take electricity so much for granted: when it goes wrong, the world around us comes to a stand-still.

In my father’s favourite film, the 1951 Sci-fi classic ‘The Day the Earth Stood Still,’ a humanoid alien visitor comes to Earth to issue an ultimatum to humanity. When the alien (played by Michael Rennie) blacks out the earth in a display of awesome power, the movie depicts thought provoking images on a world without electricity. Barring an alien invasion, Sparks is here to help you.

Some of the matters I will be writing about include what a Consumer Unit does (that’s the Fuse Box in old money - the thing on the wall that the cover keeps falling off), and what you should be doing to regularly test it to ensure the electrics in your home are safe. I will also be highlighting common mistakes made by diy-ers, and so-called professionals, on carrying out simple jobs, like installing a new socket or light fitting.

The ICP (power control switch) continues to be an on-going saga. Our recent article about ‘Smart Meters’ prompted me to contact Iberdrola to clarify the situation regarding the ICP in the new meter. The reply stated that when Smart Meters become fully operational the ICP in the meter will be the primary ICP. This will undoubtedly be a cause of concern for those on contracted low tariffs.

On the technological side of things I will keep you informed about ‘Smart Grids’ and how new technology being introduced by Iberdrola will affect our everyday life.

I don’t fix televisions and I don’t sell Rampant Rabbits: I just do what I have been doing since I left school in 1973 for nearly 40 years… I do electrics! So Houston, if you have a problem, Sparks is your hombre. I invite you to email any question or problem you have about the electrics in your home, however small.
