Fashion experts criticize the Spanish Olympic uniform

FASHION EXPERTS polled by Spanish publication 20minutes.es have slammed the newly released designs to be worn by Spanish athletes competing in the London 2012 Olympic Games.
The new uniforms have been blasted on a number of levels for their ‘lumpiness’, their ‘over-fussy’ embellishments and trim, garish colours and worst of all, their Russian designer:  the design and manufacture of the uniforms was outsourced to Russian fashion house Bosco di Ciliegi – a move the Spanish rag trade sees as an unforgiveable insult.

NOT RIGHT
The kindest remarks made by Spanish fashion experts ACME (The Association of Spanish Designers) included: “In a country like Spain with great designers, a competent textile industry and a powerful distribution capacity it doesn’t seem right to recourse to a Russian company.”
The Association expected at least a fair chance for national companies to submit their designs, perhaps as part of a competition.  Instead they feel they have been side-lined and disallowed the opportunity to represent Spain and to promote a national industry, especially in the current difficult economic climate.

SAD
Patricia López, a member of ADEEM (an Association of Spanish Designers) said she was “saddened” that a task so important was “taken out of the hands of national talent.”
Fashion blogger Ana Bedia was more scathing:  “Vulgar. The female version is a sort of ‘stewardess’ uniform with a slight ‘Indian sari’ motif,” adding, “The bell-bottomed men’s uniform is out-dated.  No Spanish athlete deserves to look like this!”

Other comments referred to “red and yellow Thunderbird puppets.”
The Director of Communication for the Spanish Olympic Committee, Chema Bellon, is “satisfied” with the choice of uniform and points out that the designs have been available for comment for some months, although they did not attract this week’s eruption of criticism.  He concluded by pointing out that Bosco is one of the team’s sponsors.
