DETERMINED ANIMAL lover Rose Grun aims to bring a stranger to justice after he drove through a Marina Alta town dragging a terrified dog behind his car.
She said she is suffering nightmares after witnessing the “horrific and spitefully cruel” episode and has already made a complaint to the police after noting the car’s registration number.
But she told RTN: “We are trying to raise some money to get a lawyer for a private prosecution if the Guardia Civil does nothing – I am very determined and I am not going to stop until this person is punished.”
Rose was at the German garage in Pedregeur at around 4.30pm on Wednesday 13th June when she saw an old white car drive by at speed – between 70 and 80km/h – “and tied to the back was a pitiful little black and white emaciated dog trying but failing to keep up.”
She jumped into her own car and gave chase and pulled up behind the car when it stopped on the outskirts of Pedregeur on the road to Llosa de Camacho and confronted the driver.
CRUEL
“He was astonished that I was screaming and crying for the poor little animal and asking why he could be so brutally cruel. He just untied the dog and threw its body into the back seat and drove off – I took photos of the blood all over the road.”
Rose believed the animal was dead but this week there were unconfirmed reports a badly injured dog had been taken to APAD in Denia.
“When he picked it up, it didn’t move or make a sound, so I assumed it was dead,” she said. “If it is alive, perhaps he relented and took it to the rescue centre but it must be badly injured and might not survive.”
Rose, who currently has two dogs and a cat, added: “This was absolutely terrible – when you have a dog it trusts you in every way. When you take it and tie it to the car, it still trusts you and it still trusts you when you drive off and it can’t run that fast....I don’t even want to consider what the dog was thinking at that point, full of panic and when he couldn’t run anymore just being dragged.”
She said after making Spain her home for 18 years the incident had left her so shocked she was considering leaving the country. “It has really shaken me; I never imagined that in all my life I would see something like this.”
