Rods and Reels

WELL HERE is 2013 so Happy New Year to you all - hope you are ready to get out and catch some fish!

Our first match this year was the 3rd in the Presidents cup series, the venue being the Embalse de Pedrera.  At this time of year and with the cold winds, lakes are not normally the best to fish.  However, fishing the deeper parts has produced some fish and some blanks for other anglers. As it was the first match of the New Year there was only a small turnout as some people were still in the UK. Of the 10 who turned up there were five blanks: fishing is not easy!

TOP RODS ON THE DAY

1st     Dave (Yours Truly) Hoare fishing the feeder and using maggot with 7.60 kilos
2nd     Jim (The Chairman) Rouse fishing the feeder using maggot with 3.60 kilos
3rd     Tony (The Flower man) Price fishing the feeder using maggot with 2.74 kilos

PLEASE NOTE

The club has some vacancies at present: if you are interested in joining please contact Derek Swann on 96 672 9293 or 603 535 771.

ABBEY ANGLING RESULTS Supplied by Terry Screen

Firstly I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy and Healthy New Year.
As our first cup match is not until 8th January, a few of us got together this week for an open match on the Embalsa de Pedrera. The water level has now started to rise slightly and the temperature is down, fish are being caught on various baits but not in great numbers.  The best on the day was Richard King with four Carp but he also lost four.

1st     Richard (The Lion heart) King with 4.520kg fishing the feeder using corn
2nd     Pete (Yorkie) Kerr with 2.920kg fishing the feeder using maggot
3rd     Terry (Swing ‘Em) Screen with 2.100kg fishing the feeder using pellet
The new annual fixture list will be available as soon as confirmation is received for all the match dates, and our next club meeting will be on 14th January 2013 at The Abbey Tavern. All details are available from our website www.abbeyangling.com or from the match secretary Terry Screen on 96 532 8368.

Anglers Together

THE OBJECTIVE of Anglers Together was to introduce anglers to each other, who otherwise had no one to fish with or didn’t know where to fish.

It was successful in bringing together many anglers who established friendships and which continue to this day.

THIS WEEK’S competition was the halfway point of the Winter Championship: 11 matches with the best eight results to count. The venue was the Embalse de Ojos or Blanca as it is better known.

Sixteen brave anglers turned out hoping that although it was late in the year the fish would still feed.  Alas, that was not the case: there were still seven blanks. The only bonus on the day was it did not rain and the next match is June 2013!   One notable angler said afterwards that this was the 3rd time of fishing there without a bite and some 19.5 hours of frustration.

TOP RODS ON THE DAY

1st     Doug (Welsh Goldminer) Hornblow fishing the feeder using pellet with 11.14 kilos
2nd     Mick (The Arsenal) Hill fishing the feeder using pellet with 6.58 kilos
3rd     Terry (Swing ‘Em) Screen fishing the feeder using pellet with 4.74 kilos

After all the recent rain the day remained dry and bright for our Annual Xmas Contest on 20th November on the river Segura at the Eden Stretch.  The water was up and coloured and pushing through - fishing was hard on the day keeping the weights down.  This is now to be expected with the colder nights.

Andy Stevenson was drawn one above the pylons making the best of the day with a winning weight of 5.660kg taken on feeder and corn, Well done!

1st     Andy (The Web man) Stevenson with 5.660kg fishing the feeder and using corn
2nd     Ian (The Irish Wizard) Dalzell with 3.960kg fishing the feeder and using pellet
3rd     Clive (Golf no more) Cleghorn with 3.840kg fishing the pole and feeder using corn

A good day was had by all which was followed by the presentation of the prizes at the Marjal Campsite.

SUPPORT FOR EMAUS

Club de Pesca, Rods and Reels, with support from Abbey Anglers, have raised a total of 1,890€ from its Charity Fishing match and other events generating cash advances to help with the payment of utility bills, and the provision of decorating materials, pillows, shower equipment and shoes for the children.

In addition, members from both clubs have donated huge quantities of toiletries, clothes and toys.  Many thanks to club members - and also outside supporters - who helped provide much-needed support for Emaus.

ABBEY ANGLING RESULTS: Supplied by Terry Screen

With this week so far being the hottest week of the year, we began the first match of the Winter League at the Embalsa de Argos 21st August.

The water is still receding very fast and is now roughly 20 metres down the bank from the winter water line.

I did not see any small fry in the margins which is unusual at this time of the year, but there are shoals of 3-4inch Bass patrolling the edge of the water eating whatever moves.

The Barbel also conspicuous by their absence - with only a couple taken on the day - they did not respond to hemp and pellet up in the water.

1st     Ian (The Wizard) Dalzell with 36.120kg on feeder and pellet
2nd     Dave (The Sweetie Man) Hutchinson with 29.880kg on pole and paste
3rd     Terry (Swing ‘Em) Screen with 26.420kg also on pole and paste

All details are available on our website www.abbeyangling.com or from the Match Secretary Terry Screen on 96 532 8368: also anyone needing pole or rod repairs can contact me on the above number.

The 9th round of the Summer Series was fished on the Eden Stretch on 31st July.

The reeds and the bank side vegetation grow at an alarming rate, pegs that were cleared only a few weeks ago are now almost overgrown.  There is a good algae bloom in the water but very little flow, and the fish were reluctant to feed with only one double figure weight.

1st     Bill (The Master) Reade with 15.100kg fishing the pole using corn and paste
2nd     Terry (Swing ‘Em) Screen with 9.880kg fishing the pole using paste and pellet
3rd     Dave (The Sweetie Man) Hutchinson with 7.840kg fishing the pole using pellet and paste

THIS WEEK was the last match of the season 2011-2012. The new season commences in September so if you want to join now will be the best time so as to fish all of the coming season.

This week’s competition was the last in the Summer Championship, held at the Embalse de Argos. The water level is receding fast and some of the pegs near the point are virtually impossible to fish. Again, there were a couple of good weights from the anglers who have sorted the venue, but still for others it is a struggle.

TOP RODS ON THE DAY
  • 1st     Doug (Welsh Goldminer) Hornblow fishing the feeder using pellet with 43.76 kilos
  • 2nd     Ian (Irish Wizard) Dalzell fishing the pole and feeder using hemp and pellet with 35.94 kilos
  • 3rd     Pete (The Peg) Hampshire fishing the feeder using corn with 23.16 kilos

WINNERS OF THE SUMMER CHAMPIONSHIP

This week we were at Nancy’s for the 8th round of the Summer Series on the 24th July: there is still plenty of water in this stretch, with good colour.

There was hardly any flow on the river and I think that perhaps the ebb and flow of the Med, although the tide is only approximately 9-10 inches, affects the stretch and backs the water up. The fish seem reluctant to feed when the flow stops.

  • 1st     Doug (The Welsh Goldminer) Hornblow with 17.420kg on pole and pellet
  • 2nd     Dave (Yours Truly) Hoare with 16.500kg on pole feeder and maggot
  • 3rd     Dave (The Sweetie Man) Hutchinson with 14.100kg pole and corn

Rods and Reels

THE COMPETITION this week was the annual memorial match held in memory of one of the club’s former anglers and committee member. The venue was the Rio Segura at Murcia.

For those who know the venue, the water was right under the road bridge, i.e. some 18 inches or so higher than normal. Where this water has come from is a mystery to all of us as we have had no rain! Several brave souls managed to drive under the bridge with a few of us deciding to walk to the higher numbered pegs. The river fished reasonably well considering that it was in flood, with all anglers catching fish.

TOP RODS ON THE DAY

1st Dave (Yours Truly) Hoare fishing the pole using bread with 20.98 kilos
2nd Alan (The Quiet Man) Read fishing the feeder using bread with 20.48 kilos
3rd Terry (Swing ‘Em) Screen fishing the pole using paste and pellet with 19.85 kilos

This week was also the final of the Knockout series.

THE WINNERS ON THE DAY

Lenny Bolton with 14.48 kilos
Alan Roscoe with 13.50 kilos
Terry Screen with 9.48 kilos

The 5th round of the Summer Series was fished on the 3rd July at the Sweetwater.  There was plenty of colour in the water with a lot of flow. However, as soon as the flow stopped so did the fishing.

1st Bill (The Master) Reade with 15.06kg on the pole and using corn
2nd Lenny (Ex Cultural Attachee) Bolton fishing the pole using maggot with 14.06 kg
3rd Bob (The Major) Rafferty fishing the pole using corn with 12.04kg

THIS WEEK’S match was the 7th in the Summer Championship series. The venue was the now infamous Blanca!

Again this week the venue never failed us, as of the 17 anglers there we had six blanks. The day, as most have been of late, was very hot and humid with some wind from midday on. Although the weights were slightly better than previous matches, even the really warm weather has not changed things too much.

TOP RODS ON THE DAY

1st     Clive (Golf no More) Cleghorn fishing the feeder using corn with 10 kilos
2nd     Dave (Yours Truly) Hoare fishing the feeder using corn with 9.08 kilos
3rd     Lenny (Ex Cultural Attachee) Bolton fishing the pole paste and pellet with 7.16 kilos

THIS WEEK’S KNOCKOUT QUALIFIERS ARE

Mick Hill with 10.6 kilos
Terry Screen with 10.2 kilos
Steve Budd with 5.2 kilos

ABBEY ANGLERS MATCH RESULTS by Terry Screen

This week’s 4th round match was fished at Nancy’s on 26th June.  The water is now back to square one after the dredging earlier in the year with lots of reed beds forming islands in the river. There was some flow and the water looked like a pea-souper giving the fish confidence to feed in the coloured water and a lot of big fish were lost.

Lenny Bolton was the winner on the day fishing the top outlet: this man is a real master at catching fish.

1st     Lenny (Ex Cultural Attachee) Bolton fishing the pole using maggot with 20.60 kilos
2nd     Andy (The Webman) Stevenson fishing the feeder using corn with 15.38 kilos
3rd     Dave (The Sweetie Man) Hutchinson fishing the pole using corn with 15.02 kilos

I would like to thank all the kind and generous people who sponsored me in the Emaus Charity match.

Rods and Reels
THIS WEEK’S competition was the last round of the Coastrider Team matches; this also being the last team match this season, the standings to date being Abbey Anglers winning one series and Rods and Reels winning the other.

This match was finely tuned as both teams had won two off matches, and being the best of five this was the decider! Well Rods and Reels managed an overwhelming victory by nearly doubling the weight of Abbey Anglers.

The venue was the Rio Segura at Murcia a venue I really enjoy fishing. This week though was a disaster for me, drawn just under the road bridge by the steps. As the river was flowing with the rain of late, I could just get to the flow with 14 meters. This also just managed to clear the reeds as well.

First trot down float under and within a nano-second my elastic had bottomed out and the pole had bent double. Holding and praying it would come back was to no avail, my no4 section broke and with that the top section went upstream. Great start!  So if anybody fishing at Murcia comes across a top 2 section with half a no4 section attached I would appreciate a phone call as I will come to collect.
I would like to thank Mick Hill who kindly lent me a pole so that I could still fish.

1st     Lenny (Ex Cultural Attache) Bolton fishing the pole using paste and pellet with 44.62 kilos
2nd     Terry (Swing ‘Em) Screen fishing the feeder using pellet with 15.04 kilos
3rd     Alan (The Emperor) Roscoe fishing the pole using paste with 12.06 kilos

OVERALL WEIGHTS ON THE DAY
Abbey Anglers 54 kilos
Rods and Reels 95 kilos

Therefore Rods and Reels win the Coastrider Trophy.

STANDINGS FOR THE 3 TEAM MATCHES
Abbey Anglers winning the Gary Smith trophy
Rods and Reels winning the RTN trophy and the Coastrider Trophy

This week was also the 3rd round of the Knockout series. This series is of four rounds with five anglers per round and the top 12 fish go through to the final. This week’s qualifiers are:

Lenny Bolton with 11.68 kilos
Pete Kerr with 3.28 kilos
Alan Roscoe with 3.20 kilos

The 3rd round of the Summer Series was fished on the 19th June at the Embalse de Argos.
Thunder and heavy rains in the early morning made it look as if we were in for a bad day, the thunder and lightning continued all the way there and it was a terrific spectacle of flashing lights in the sky but fortunately the rain stopped just before the match started.

The lake has now dropped about 10 foot as the summer and the growing season is making demands for the water.

Marlene (The sweetie lady) is still on top form recording good weights but not quite good enough to beat her husband Dave who won the match with an excellent bag of fish.

1st Dave (The Sweetie Man) Hutchinson with 39.600kg on the pole and using paste
2nd Terry (Swing ‘Em) Screen with 25.200kg on the feeder and using pellet
3rd Clive (Golf no more) Cleghorne with 18.400kg on the monkey up in the water with hemp and tares

THIS WEEK’S competition was the 6th round of the Summer Championship, and again, we were at the Embalse de Argos.  Now it needs to be called ‘Argos the unpredictable’.

Again Carp were the main species with the Barbel keeping a very low profile. Fishing up in the water, for whatever reason, is just not working. Fair play to Dave ‘The Sweetie Man’, he started fishing paste at 13 meters and caught all day right from the off. Consensus of opinion is, he is using his jelly baby heads as the basis for his paste - now to find out what flavour he is using! The angler next to him, who cannot be named due to a super-injunction, could only sit and watch…

1st      Dave (The Sweetie Man) Hutchinson fishing the pole using paste with 35.06 kilos
2nd     Lenny (Ex Cultural Attache) Bolton fishing the pole using paste with 29.84 kilos
3rd     Dave (Yours Truly) Hoare fishing the feeder using pellet with 16.90 kilos

This week the 2nd match of the Summer Series was fished on the River Segura at Murcia on the 12th June.  The first 20 pegs on the water at ‘A’ Section have been cleared of the reeds by someone, and the water was a terrible colour.

The stretch we fished, between the ramp and the Crystal Bridge, has only limited pegs and the work is urgently required: there is still no date as to when it will commence.

Ian Dalzell, still managing to draw peg one, found to his dismay that the water had been reversed pegged for the match, but peg one was on the Crystal Bridge. With him being an excellent angler and drawing this peg, the outcome was inevitable and he won the match easily.

1st    Ian (The Irish Wizard) Dalzell with 47.600kg
2nd     Lennie (Ex Cultural Attache) Bolton with 23.200kg
3rd     Bill (The Master) Reade with 15.800kg

THIS WEEK’S competition was the 3rd round of the Summer League, the venue being the Rio Segura, Murcia.

Well, it has been several weeks since we fished this venue, but nature has decided in that time to take over. Swims that we fished just those weeks ago are now unfishable with the reeds marching along the banks and across the river. If the Murcia federation doesn’t do anything very soon there will be about 10 to 15 swims only!

The flow of the river is now very sedate to at times virtually non-existent. Whether this is the precursor as to the work that will be carried out is anybody’s guess. The good thing is the river is still fishing well.

TOP RODS ON THE DAY
1st     Neil (The Boy) McBirnie fishing the pole using pellet and corn with 20.84 kilos

The 8th round of the Spring Series saw us fishing the Embalsa De Argos 8th May.
I was informed that the moon is now at its closest to the Earth for many years, and there are a lot of Anglers who believe these lunar phases have an effect on fishing.

The late Sean Egan, a well-known fisherman from Athlone, published a book on this subject and also advised on what he thought were the best days to go fishing: perhaps this could possibly be the cause of the poor fishing at Argos this week. The fish would not come up in the water for the hemp and catching fish was hard for this time of the year - we would normally expect bags of between 15 and 30kgs.

1st     Ian (The Irish Wizard) Dalzell with 21.100kg fishing the feeder using pellet and the pole using hemp
2nd     Bill (The Master) Reade with 14.040kg fishing the feeder using corn and pole using hemp and tares
3rd     Lennie (The ExCultural Attache) Bolton with 11.700kg fishing pole using pellet
