Keeping an eye on diabetes

THERE ARE approximately 285 million people worldwide who live with impaired vision and blindness, yet 80% of visual impairment is avoidable through treatment and protective measures.
While the most significant number of cases of blindness occurs in third world countries, there are conditions which occur throughout the developed world which can also cause people to lose their sight. Diabetes is one of these conditions, with 171 million sufferers worldwide. Unfortunately, due to the increase in obesity this is a growing problem throughout Europe and America.

To mark World Diabetes Day on November 14th Specsavers has put together the following useful information about Diabetic retinopathy.
What is Diabetic retinopathy?

Diabetic retinopathy, a condition which affects vision, occurs when the blood vessels in the retina are damaged by the changes in blood sugar levels. This leads to blurry vision which can often come and go throughout the day.

If untreated, the condition can become more serious, resulting in the network of blood vessels which supply the retina suffering permanent damage. This can result in irreversible vision loss. In order to avoid problems with sight, it is important that blood sugar level, blood pressure and cholesterol levels are controlled.

Not all diabetes causes sight loss, but it is important to have regular screenings and eye tests so that any problems or changes can be monitored. Most complications can be treated; however it is vital that they are detected early. Once vision is lost, it cannot be restored.

Specsavers Opticas are offering free eye tests so people can ensure their vision is good and their eyes are healthy. There are seven Specsavers Opticas stores on the Costa Blanca, Costa del Sol and Mallorca and their eighth store is opening in Marbella in November. Visit www.specsavers.es to find your nearest store.

DIABETES, A long-term and chronic condition, is sometimes known as Diabetes Mellitus is caused by too much glucose, a type of sugar, in the blood. It is thought that by 2030 more than 438 million people could be affected.

MAIN SYMPTOMS
Passing urine more often than usual, especially at night
Increased thirst
Extreme tiredness
Unexplained weight loss
Genital itching or regular episodes of thrush
Slow healing of cuts and wounds
Blurred vision

Sugar in the blood is controlled by insulin (produced by the pancreas). As food is digested, insulin moves glucose out of the blood and into cells, where it is broken down to produce energy. Diabetics do not have enough insulin for this to happen.

Diabetes Type 1 occurs when the body produces no insulin. Usually developed before the age of 40, only 10% of sufferers are Type 1, needing to take insulin injections for life, eat a healthy diet and have regular blood tests.

Type 2 Diabetes occurs when not enough insulin is produced by the body - it may be controlled by eating healthily although patients may need to have regular insulin injections eventually.  It can go undetected for years, often associated with obesity: 1 in 5 adults in Europe are now classified as obese.
Monitoring your health is crucial to prevent associated complications. Know your blood glucose; blood pressure; blood fat levels.  Care for your feet; have your eyes screened; adjust lifestyle and diet.

CAMBRIDGE 800
Your accredited Cambridge 800 Consultant has specialist training in the treatment of Diabetes and follows a strict protocol overseen by the Medical Director of Cambridge 800.
Blood glucose levels respond quickly to Cambridge 800 products with improvements in a short time.  Diet should include complex carbohydrate; eating regularly; avoiding sugars; eating fresh season vegetables (not too much as it has a high level of natural sugar).

ALCOHOL
Alcohol converts into sugar, each gram equal to 7 calories, with no beneficial nutrition.  We are not saying ‘move to a convent!’ We do suggest caution and taking responsibility for your own chronic condition.  Complications could include limb amputation; blindness; ulcers/wounds that won’t heal; kidney failure and fatty deposits in the arteries leading to high blood pressure, Cardiovascular disease and Coronary Heart disease.

The key is to lose inches around the waist where weight is a real risk factor.

THIS WEEK has been the UK National Diabetes Week. Researchers have demonstrated a strong link between having a large waist circumference and an increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, independent of a person’s body mass index (BMI).

In the biggest study of its kind, a team led by the Medical Research Council (MRC) Epidemiology Unit, examined data from more than 340,000 people from eight European countries. They found that overweight people with a large waist (defined in this study as over 40 inches/102cm for men and over 34.5 inches/88cm for women) had a similar risk of developing diabetes to those who are clinically obese. This correlation was particularly strong in women.

With a likely 850,000 cases of undiagnosed cases of Type 2 diabetes in the UK alone, around one person in every 74 has an undiagnosed case of the condition. This means that most people will have a friend or family member who has the condition but does not know it.

"A real problem”

Diabetics often suffer conditions including high blood pressure, blindness, amputation, kidney failure and stroke. Getting these people diagnosed is a race against time, and unfortunately it is a race we are all too often losing.

One of the best ways of controlling and/or reversing Diabetes is exercising regularly and losing weight. This can help diabetes be lowered by 60 percent.

I personally have helped clients with Diabetes, using the HypnoBand™.  One of my clients, Mr P from Villamartin, has written these words “I have been diabetic for a number of years and this, added to my general weight, has caused me many problems. I have tried on many occasions to diet and been under specialist diabetic consultants who have always recommended nutritional programs to aid my general health on both fronts. However the results have had little success.

I enrolled on your HypnoBand™ weight loss programme with some skepticism but I was open minded and willing to try `something new´. You will know from my comments between visits of the successes achieved so far.

Now four months since my first visit I can clarify for you the results so far of my programme. I have lost 19lbs in weight and continue to lose weight at about 3lbs per month. At the start of the programme I was injecting insulin four times a day - about 82 units per day in total. I now inject three times a day and my total intake of units is less than 50 per day.  I have this week, kept my appointment with my Diabetic Consultant who also informed me that apart from achieving lower daily readings my six month blood test shows a reduction of 30% in my blood sugar levels.  He has, in consequence, ceased my six monthly visits to him referring me now to just my GP. For anyone in a similar situation regarding weight loss or diabetes I would certainly recommend them trying your HypnoBand™ programme and I have no objections to you using my recommendations to any of your potential clients.”

The Hypnoband™ is not designed for rapid unhealthy weight loss or as a quick fix, but for long term weight control.

Mark Phoenix Murphy Adv.Dhp MIAPH MNRAH is a licensed HypnoBand™ Practitioner on the Costa Blanca and Costa Calida. The programme is trademarked and used worldwide to ensure you get the real programme. HypnoBand™ has appeared in the press worldwide and many television programs including Channel 4 Embarrassing Bodies. Mark has appeared on local television and radio and has written many articles on the HypnoBand™.

New Diabetes II treatment

A PIONEERING operation that allows the body of a Diabetes II sufferer to regenerate insulin without the help of daily injections has been carried out on a patient code-named ‘Andrew’.  The operation involves an intestinal bypass that allows Andrew to take one pill per day instead of injecting insulin as he has done for more than 20 years.
