Festival fun
THE SECOND Benitachell International Festival is being held on Sunday 23rd June after being postponed because of bad weather.
The Santa Maria Magdelena School hosts the event which starts at 11.30am and is officially opened by Mayor Josep Femenia Mas at 11.45am.
A collaboration between Benitachell Arts Centre, the town hall and the school, the event has taken months to prepare and organisers and hoping the gods will be kind with the weather next weekend.
On stage there will be traditional Spanish dancing, Flamenco, and live music from The Hoaxx, SFM, and MP7.
And there will also be over 40 stalls selling gifts at bargain prices, beauty treatments, and ‘nearly new’ stands.
And for the children there is electronic football shooting, a bouncy castle, face painting, Slush Puppies, games and a children’s entertainment company.
And visitors can enjoy international food on the day from sausage and bacon butties to paella and burgers – as well as freshly baked bread and cakes and a bar.

Board games are still great FUN!
THE OLD idea of ‘Study hard get a good degree and you will be set up for life’ is long gone. Some young people with degrees are now serving burgers and fries.
‘Get a job in a big company and you’ll get a good pension at the end,’ was what people used to say. But there is no job security or company loyalty any more. We hear of 50-year-olds who have worked in a firm for 30 years suddenly out looking for a job. Governments are running out of money, countries are going bankrupt... In today’s world the only way to be financially secure is to be financially aware and invest wisely and it’s never too late (or too early) to start.
The current recession got local resident John MacNamara thinking. With over thirty years experience of financial markets in the City of London he has incorporated his knowledge into a board game. He decided to call the game ‘Realism’ - a way to prepare for or change behaviour to cope with real life, learning in a fun way how to make good choices and to experience the penalties involved in risky investments.
Nowadays, with computers such an integral part of our lives, we all tend to seek answers on screen. John himself wondered as he created the game. “Who plays board games nowadays?” He was surprised to find a recent study in the UK showing that board games are alive and well, and that six out of ten families choose board games over ‘unsociable’ computer games in holiday periods. Since ‘staying in’ is the new ‘going out’ in these recessionary times, sales of board games have soared - up 20% over the last three years.
“Financial awareness is hugely important in today’s world,” says John. “We owe it to our children and grandchildren to make sure they are financially savvy. What better way than a fun and realistic board game that all generations can enjoy and that subtly teaches about investment and managing money?”
Summing up the game, John told RTN: “Realism is a traditional style family board game. It gets children away from their computers to sit down and play a game as a family and it makes a great present.”

Costa Blanca Tourism’s new planning website
IF YOU are looking for something to do on the Costa Blanca or trying to plan something for visiting friends or family, Costa Blanca’s Tourism Board has just launched a new website, with details of where to go and what to do on your vacation from zero euros and up!
The Provincial Tourism Board of the Costa Blanca has launched the web site to coincide with the Easter holidays, offering a new initiative to facilitate planning getaways to different destinations in the province of Alicante. This is a website containing a wide variety of different ideas developed in collaboration with municipalities and tourism industry professionals. The link is: www.tuplancostablanca.com and it includes a total of fifteen short stay plans, with links to restaurants, lodging and companies offering organized activities that are collaborating with the campaign by providing competitive prices and extra services at no cost. The microsite offers two possibilities to potential visitors: opt for one of the fifteen plans already made, or make your own plan, choosing from over 200 deals and suggestions that are presented by companies and municipalities that have joined the initiative.
Tourism and Deputy Vice of the Board of Trustees, Joaquín Albaladejo, explained that “the main idea is to offer potential visitors a number of attractive proposals that enable them to do something special on their holidays without travelling too far and without entailing great economic effort.”
The plans have paid special attention to leisure proposals that need not involve any cost to the visitor, and yet are of great appeal. In this regard it is suggested, for example, routes through the highlights of an area or municipality, whether for its cultural value, its urban appeal or for the beauty of its natural environment.
Nautical activities, internal routes, cultural offerings and places that stand out for their Holy Week processions are some of the topics that have been taken into account when preparing the various plans. The Global promotional campaign launched during the Week of Provincial Tourism, specifically for Semana Santa, has this year focused mainly on territories near and Albacete, Murcia and Valencia.
